My Progression with CM Defense, part 2
Hi, thanks for visiting again. Today, I will continue where we left off regarding teaching and learning CM Defense. After using the mitts in practising your defense and offence using jabs and crosses, what you need next is to learn how to execute straight punches to the body, blocking them, as well as using combination theory to enhance your CM performance.
First, you need tolearn how to block the low straight punches and round punches using CM, then isolate them using the wall drills that Rodney explains in his StreetBox DVD. Once you got that, then start learning how to do boxing combo and understand the principle behind it. My understanding is that, for combos to work, you can only put 3-5 boxing techniques alltogether (jab, cross, hook, cross or jab, cross, uppercut, cross), but always remember that regardless what boxing combos you use, always finish the combos with a straight punch to the face after you did the hooking punches, so that if you miss hitting your opponent with hooking punches, the follow up straight punches always saves you.
Once you get this, then start putting them into what I call "Performance Games". One performance game you can start is to lightly spar your partner where it is jab vs jab, where both of you try to tap each other's foreheads with your palms. This game is alive and that you needto move around and spar without injuring each other. I mean, when I teach beginner, often times people are so nervous and overzealous when they have to wear boxing gloves to this game. In their mind, they think it's sparring and that they're gonna get hurt;therefore, its better tohurt first before they themselves got hurt. These can cause injuries and that it will be then harder to find willing partners to train.
By training using your palms, you can give your new partner que to relax and enjoy the game more and a lower pace and intensity at the beginning. Then,as you get better offcourse you can pump it up.
Try this game with more experienced guys, cause I remember one time I broke my fingers, where I was training relax, but my partner was hitting me hard. Our hands, accidentally collinde where my fingers hit his forearms. Therefore; protect your finghers by stiffening them a bit.
OK, now from jab vs jab, progress to jabcross toface vs jaccross roface, then add straight punches to the stomach. Remember to always hit high to the face after you hit low, otherwise you might get nailed in the face.
OK, next letter Iwill emphasize on how touse the performance games with adding more elements such as hooking punches as well as what drill to do so that your hips is always square with your opponents.
Happy training!!
